How to Dye Synthetic Hair With Food Coloring

Tired of the same color hair every day, but you don't want to buy a new wig just for the color? Well, fortunately, there are other methods to dyeing your wig without causing irreparable damage—here's what to do!

Using food coloring is a cheap and easy way to dye your hair without causing damage. For a temporary option, you can use white conditioned, and for a more permanent option, you will need to use a developer. While the dye will fade faster than store-bought dyes, it's a great commitment-free option.

If you're keen on coloring your synthetic wig with food coloring, keep reading to find out everything you will need to do this, as well as a step-by-step guide on how to get this right!

What You Will Need To Dye Your Synthetic Wig With Food Coloring

Before you can start this super fun process the most important part is to make sure you have everything ready that you will need.

A Flat Surface.

When you dye your synthetic wig, you will need a flat surface to work on. You can work on a countertop in the kitchen, a table or if all else fails you can even work on the floor.

A Towel.

It is best to use an old towel or a towel that you do not mind staining, as food coloring stains almost everything it touches.

A Brush.

You will need a brush or a comb to comb through the hair. If you have a brush that can stain rather use a comb, as you will be combing the hair with the food coloring in it.

A Dish/Bowl.

Use a dish/bowl to pour the food coloring in. Preferably use a glass dish/bowl so that the food coloring doesn't stain your equipment permanently.

Gloves.

I would not suggest trying this process without gloves, because food coloring stains everything and your hands will be the color of your hair for a long time after this process!

Spoon or Something To Mix With.

You will need something to mix the food coloring and the hair mousse with. You can use a spoon or object like a paintbrush, basically anything that you feel you can mix it with.

Hair Mousse.

The hair mousse will be mixed with food coloring, so you don't need to buy an expensive brand. Any brand you can find at your closest supermarket or local store will do.

Food Coloring.

Buy food coloring of any color you want. Remember the lighter the color, the lighter it will be on the hair.

So now that you have everything you need, you will have to prepare a few things before you can get to the actual coloring process. Let's get started!

Preparing For Coloring The Hair

There are a few important things that need to be done first before you can begin the process of coloring your synthetic wig:

  • Put down the towel. Spread the towel out on the flat surface, so that it is even and easy to work on.
  • Put your gloves on. You have to put the gloves on before you start with any of the products to avoid staining your hands.
  • Brush through the hair. Place the hair on the towel and brush it out. Make sure it is brushed straight across the towel evenly.
  • Mix the mousse and the food coloring. Put a small amount of mousse in your dish if you are planning on only coloring one section of the hair. The more hair you want to dye the more mousse you use. Add a couple of drops of food coloring to make the color as bright as you want. Then stir it up in the mousse until evenly blended.
  • You can now start applying. Once everything is set up and your color is mixed, you can follow my next step-by-step guide to apply it.

I have done some research and put together a step-by-step guide on how to dye your synthetic wig with food coloring. Let's get going!

Step-by-Step Guide: Dyeing Your Synthetic Wig With Food Coloring

Last but not least, you will be applying the color to your synthetic wig. I have put it into 8 easy steps for you to follow:

Dyeing your hair with food coloring

Step 01: Begin Application.

  • When you apply the dye you can use a wide paintbrush if you have one or something of the sort. If you do not have anything just apply it using your fingers, as it works just as well.
  • Apply to the hair by spreading it out where you want it to be on the wig. For example, if you only want the ends done, only apply it there. If you want the whole wig dyed, you have to apply it evenly all over, covering every strand of hair.
  • Once you have applied to the one side, flip the wig over and do the same thing on the other side.

Step 02: Wait For The Color To Take To The Hair.

Once both sides are applied and you are satisfied that it was done evenly, let the mixture sit on the hair for about 30 minutes if you are looking for a lighter color. If you want a strong color, I would suggest you leave it on for 60 minutes to ensure it takes properly for that bright color you are looking for.

The above time limits are merely a suggestion. The best way to tell if your color has set in is by observing the color regularly and rinsing the hair off only when you can see the color has set.

Step 03: Rinse The Hair.

  • After you let the hair sit with the color on, take the hair to a basin to rinse the food coloring off. Rinse it off with cold water, as warm water will make the food coloring come out easier.
  • While rinsing the hair, don't rub it too much as that will cause the color to come out. When the hair is wet the color will keep on rinsing off, but if you rub it while it is dry the color will not come off.
  • Once the water has rinsed the hair correctly, you can remove the wig from the water.

Step 04: Dry The Hair.

The next step is to dry the hair off. Place it on a clean place of the towel and brush through the hair again. Dab the towel over the hair to pull out most of the water and then free to use a blow-dryer to dry out the whole wig.

Step 05: Style The Hair.

Style the hair however you want or according to the wig's original style. If you have used heat on your synthetic wig before and your wig can take heat, you can style the wig with a straightener or a curling iron.

Just keep in mind that synthetic hair is very sensitive to heat and you should always be very cautious. If your wig cannot take the heat, blow-dry the wig on a very low heat setting and allow the style to set.

INSIDER TIP: Food coloring is well-known for being a more temporary option for coloring your hair. This means that you will need to touch-up the color every now and then to keep it looking good. As soon as you notice the color fading slightly, re-apply the methods above to revive the color.

Final Thoughts

Coloring your hair with food coloring is both an exciting and easy way to color your synthetic hair without worrying about damage or a long-lasting commitment. If you follow the steps above you will no doubt achieve amazing results!
